Frequently Asked Questions

  • What kind of makeup brushes do I need to get started?

Fewer than you would think. Most people get everything they need from four or five makeup brushes: a foundation brush for complexion products, a softer face brush for powder or blush, an all-over eyeshadow brush, and a small precision brush for liner or brows.

A makeup brush set is the easiest place to begin, because it covers those essentials in one purchase without you having to guess which makeup brushes to buy first. Our Face it All 2PC Brush Set and 5PC Full Face Brush Set are both built around that idea, and dual-ended makeup brushes are worth a look too, since each one does the work of two. Add specialist face brushes, like our Sculpting Face Brush or Dual-Ended Highlighter Brush, once you know which steps you do every day.

  • Which brush pairs well with foundation?

Our travel-friendly Kabuki Brush family is always a safe bet for applying our baked foundations. Try the Retractable Airbrush Kabuki Brush for fuller coverage and the Retractable Angled Kabuki Brush for customized, buildable coverage. For liquid formulas, use our dense Foundation Brush or Dual-Ended Concealer + Foundation Brush to buff in the formula.

  • How do I apply and blend foundation with a brush?

Work in small sections and buff rather than sweep. Put a little product on the back of your hand first, pick it up with the brush, then press and swirl it into the skin starting at the center of your complexion and blending outward. Build in thin layers and stop when it looks like skin.

The dense, domed head of a kabuki face brush picks up the right amount of baked powder and buffs it into an even complexion. For liquids, the Full Coverage Foundation Blending Brush is the one to reach for.

Blending is mostly about breaking up the edge where one product meets another, so use small circles, light pressure and clean makeup brushes. A duo fiber face brush like our Wonder Brush diffuses cream blush instead of pushing it around, and a Blending Crease Brush does the same job in the socket. If a color looks patchy, it usually needs more blending rather than more product.

  • What's the difference between the kabuki brushes, and what can I use them with?

The Retractable Angled Kabuki Brush works with both powders and creams, and the angled shape is made for precise placement of blush and bronzer, as well as foundation, concealer and highlighter.

Our experts recommend the Retractable Airbrush Kabuki Brush for powder formulas, including Laura Geller's Baked products. The dense bristles and domed shape give a clean, even finish across the complexion, and it handles cream and liquid formulas too. Used as a kabuki foundation brush, either one makes a good first complexion brush if you wear baked foundation.

  • Which brush pairs well with blush?

For blushes, we recommend our Angled Blush Brush. It's the perfect shape for adding a lifted sculpt to your cheeks!

  • Which eye brushes do I need for eyeshadow?

Three will cover almost any look: an All-Over Eyeshadow Brush to lay color across the lid, a Blending Crease Brush to soften the edges, and a Precision Eyeliner Brush for definition along the lash line.

Our Shadow Skills 4PC Eye Brush Set brings those eye brushes together and adds a smudger for a softer, smokier finish. Eye makeup brushes are smaller and softer than face brushes for a reason — they place color exactly where you want it. If you wear brow product, the Dual-Ended Brow Brush is the eye brush to add next.

  • When should I use a makeup sponge instead of a brush?

Reach for a makeup sponge when you want a sheerer, more skin-like finish, and makeup brushes when you want coverage and control. Damp sponges press product into the skin and sheer it out, which is why they suit liquid and cream formulas. Used dry, a sponge gives fuller coverage.

Our Full Face Blending Sponge and Baked Foundation Sponge Trio are made for exactly this, and makeup sponges are also the easiest way to press concealer into place without disturbing the foundation underneath.

  • How do I clean my brush?

Our experts recommend cleaning your brushes every two weeks by swishing them in warm water and shampoo, rinsing and letting them dry

  • Are Laura Geller makeup brushes good for mature skin?

Yes. Laura Geller makeup brushes are designed with mature skin in mind. Soft, high-quality bristles help makeup apply evenly and comfortably, making blending easier without tugging or emphasizing texture.

  • Should I buy individual makeup brushes or a brush set?

If you are starting fresh or updating your tools, a makeup brush set can be an easy place to begin. Brush sets include everyday essentials for face and eyes, making it simple to cover all the basics without overthinking it.

  • What are your makeup brushes made of, and how do they feel on skin?

We use strictly vegan synthetic bristles in all of our professional-grade makeup brushes. Synthetic bristles do not soak up liquid and cream products the way natural hair does, so more of your foundation ends up on your face and less is wasted inside the brush, and they are easier to wash and quicker to dry.

They feel soft and smooth, never scratchy. The tips are rounded rather than cut blunt, which is what stops a brush feeling prickly against the skin. That matters most on the face brushes you press and buff across your complexion, and around the delicate skin of the eye area. Every one of our makeup brushes is vegan and cruelty free.
